Pattern Review: Zadie Jumpsuit by Paper Theory

My very first Zadie jumpsuit I sewed in 2019. Although I loved the idea of it, I wasn't hooked yet. I remember choosing a linen viscose with a higher linen content and it was so itchy! I didn't enjoy wearing it. Since then I have learned more about my proportions and what suits me best. I will cover my length adjustments in this blog post.

The Zadie Jumpsuit is relaxed and easy to wear one piece that wraps around the body and fastens with a tie. You have the option of wide 3/4 length sleeves or sleeves with a dropped shoulder.

I have made the Zadie Jumpsuit in a variety of fabrics. By far my favourite is our Viscose Linens. These jumpsuits are medium weight with drape. The fabrics hold up the wrap better than the jumpsuits I made in plain viscose fabrics.

The pattern is available as PDF only now by Paper Theory Patterns. It comes in sizes 6 to 28 (bust: 80 cm till 142 cm | hip: 86 cm till 146 cm).

I made a size 14, as the pattern has 5 1/2" of ease in the bust and 8" in the hip. I have the following measurements (plus/minus):

- Bust 41 1/2" (between 16 & 18),

- Waist 36" (between 18 & 20)

- Hip 45" (18)

This pattern has 8 pattern pieces including the sleeves and bias binding piece. Latter I normally cut out of scraps without using the pattern piece.

My very first jumpsuit, I made no adjustments other than hem/length at the end. See the picture here: https://www.threadwerk.com/post/2019/05/31/may-what-have-i-been-sewing

I used a linen viscose fabric in blue which was quite itchy and I donated it since. I felt the jumpsuit didn't suit me in its proportions. I thought the waist was too low. So I abandoned the idea of the Zadie jumpsuit.

Until a few years later, it kept on popping up on my social media and I also wanted to start some sort of subscription box or sewing kits for my business. I came up with our sewing kit and chose the Zadie jumpsuit as our first kit.

With this jumpsuit I raised the waist by 3/4" only at the end. Then I adjusted the pattern and shortened the bodice by 3"4" and the rise by further 3/4". With these adjustments I went ahead and made 7 Zadie jumpsuits.

The pattern is very lovely and fits many figures. I think a very confident beginner can manage it, the instructions are great to follow. Careful when cutting your fabric, as the instructions cut on a SINGLE fabric layer so you have to flip your pattern pieces to cut mirrored pieces. I prefer cutting in two layers and can manage the jumpsuit out of 2.5m or less as I have shortened some of my pattern pieces and I cut the binding out of scraps.

With my last one, I only lengthened the rise by 1/4" back to 1/2". Some times when I raise my arms, the rise comes up making it a little uncomfortable.

I have also made a few playsuit version, just cut the legs about 4" from the crotch seam.

This is my birthday jumpsuit. The fabric made me incredible happy.

I have 2 fabrics ready cut for another short playsuit and one longer version jumpsuit. I also bought fabrics in Norway during the summer that would be perfect for this pattern. I am trying my best to make other things but I do reach for my jumpsuits often. I enjoy wearing the trouser-part as I don't have a lot of bottoms that fit me at the moment. I love that I can wear the jumpsuit with trainers to teach classes or dress them up when we go out that makes this pattern so versatile!

Thanks for hanging out with me. Have you made the Zadie Jumpsuit before?

Happy Sewing!

Maria
